Every other sport on this site lets the athlete change clothes. Triathlon does not. One garment goes on before the swim and comes off after the run, and in between it is immersed in open water or chlorine, dragged under a wetsuit and stripped at speed, sat on a saddle for anywhere from forty minutes to six hours, and then run in while still wet. Nothing about that brief is served by a cycling short with a swim panel added, and the single component most first orders get wrong — the pad — is the one that decides whether the suit is raceable at all. Start a triathlon tech pack from the fact that there is no transition wardrobe and most of the category's decisions follow logically. The garment is worn wet for the entire event, so it has to be opaque wet, drain fast and dry on the move. It is worn under a wetsuit that goes on over a wet body and comes off at a sprint, so nothing raised can sit in the shoulder, neck, underarm or upper-back zone. It is worn on a saddle, so it needs a pad — but that pad then has to be run in, which is the constraint that makes triathlon a distinct manufacturing category rather than a variation on cycling kit.
The pad is where inexperienced suppliers give themselves away. A road cycling chamois is thick, multi-density and often gel-cored, because it is worn dry, for hours, in one position. Drop that component into a trisuit and it behaves like a sponge in the swim, adds dead weight for the whole bike leg, and then swings between the legs on the run and chafes exactly where an athlete cannot do anything about it. The correct component is a thin closed-cell hydrophobic foam — typically 6 to 8 mm for sprint and Olympic distance, 8 to 10 mm for long course — skived to a feathered, seamless perimeter and attached with a flat seam that does not print through a wetsuit. It cushions less than a road chamois on purpose. That is the trade the sport requires, and a supplier who offers to "upgrade" the pad to something thicker has misunderstood the garment. The third constraint is chemical rather than mechanical. Triathletes train in pools through the winter, and chlorine destroys standard elastane. A trisuit specified with ordinary spandex fits beautifully in month one and bags out at the seat and knee by month six, at which point the club blames the factory and reorders elsewhere. Chlorine-stable elastane — PBT or an equivalent chlorine-resistant blend — is the fix, and it belongs on the quote as a line item rather than as an assumption. Almost every performance fabric brief assumes the garment starts dry and gets damp. A trisuit starts saturated and never fully dries, so the properties that matter reorder themselves. Drainage rate outranks moisture wicking, because the fabric is not managing perspiration against skin so much as shedding a lake. Recovery after repeated elongation outranks peak stretch, because the garment is stretched wet, sat on, and stretched again for hours. Chlorine and salt resistance outrank hand feel, because the training environment is more chemically aggressive than the race. And wet opacity is not a nice-to-have but a pass-or-fail specification, because the garment is worn with nothing underneath.
That last point deserves a process rather than a promise. Specify a triathlon pad by four attributes and the rest of the argument disappears: thickness, foam structure, water behaviour and edge finish. Thickness is distance-dependent — 6 to 8 mm for sprint and Olympic racing, 8 to 10 mm where an athlete will be on a saddle for four hours or more. Foam structure must be closed-cell so it cannot absorb and carry water. Water behaviour must be hydrophobic and fast-draining, verified by weighing the pad wet rather than by reading a supplier's datasheet. And the edge must be skived to a feathered, seamless perimeter, because a bound or stitched pad edge sitting against a wet inner thigh for five hours is the most reliable way to end an athlete's race. The attachment seam is then set flat, with trimmed allowances, so it does not print through a wetsuit or create a ridge under a saddle.
A wetsuit is pulled over a wet body before the start and torn off in transition, both under time pressure and neither gently. Everything in the shoulder, neck, underarm and upper-back region is therefore constructed to be invisible to neoprene sliding across it: flatlocked or bonded seams rather than overlocked ridges, seam allowances trimmed to minimum, woven labels moved to a low-friction position or replaced with a heat transfer, no applied badges, and a zip garage that keeps the slider and tape flat. A trisuit pocket has a requirement its cycling cousin never faces: it must come out of the water empty. That means an open top angled to shed rather than scoop, mesh or eyelet drainage at the base, an elasticated mouth with enough grip to hold gels at 40 km/h, and a position a rider can reach in an aero tuck without unweighting a hand. Sealed or downward-facing pockets carry half a litre of lake onto the bike and are noticed within the first kilometre. The zip follows the same race logic: short on a one-piece, full or three-quarter on a long-course top for heat and nutrition management, always with a garage and chin guard, and with a slider that holds its position rather than creeping open in an aero position. A committee orders one-piece trisuits, everyone is delighted, and then half the squad enters a middle- or long-distance race and discovers that a one-piece is the wrong tool for it. Over five hours or more an athlete needs to manage heat with a zip, get at nutrition without contorting, and use a portable toilet without effectively undressing on a course. That is what the two-piece exists for, and it is not a downgrade — it is a distance-specific garment with a longer zip, more pocket volume, a hem gripper that holds under a race belt, a slightly denser pad and a standalone waistband. Retrofitting it into a second production run later means a second sampling cycle, a second minimum, and a colour match against a lot that has already shipped.

Size sets deserve unusual care here for two reasons. A one-piece has no adjustment at all once it is on — there is no waistband to cinch and no top to size independently of a bottom — and triathlon draws an exceptionally wide range of body compositions into the same squad, from teenage juniors through to age-groupers in their seventies. Fit the size set on real athletes at both ends of the run, in an aero position on a bike and in a run stride, not standing in a clubhouse. Plenty of factories can sublimate a compression garment and sew a pad into it. Far fewer specify a pad that can be run in, flatten a wetsuit contact zone, verify opacity wet, drain a pocket, and quote a chlorine-stable base. These eight checks separate the two before you commit a deposit.
