That single fact inverts the entire garment. Where a road kit chases the lightest, most open, least-fabric construction it can get away with, an orienteering suit is a full-length, closed-face, panel-reinforced garment whose primary job is surviving continuous contact with plant matter that is engineered by evolution to catch on things.

Trail and ultra running shares the terrain but not the garment, and its defining constraint arrives from outside the kit entirely. Race organisers enforce carried-kit lists, so the athlete runs in a loaded hydration vest, and that vest owns the shoulders and the upper back from the start line to the finish arch. Fabric Engineering: A Closed Face for Forest, Ventilation Only Where the Vest Is Not

The orienteering suit body is a snag problem before it is a thermal one, and the distinction decides the fabric. A bramble or a thorn does not tear a knit — it hooks a loop and pulls it, which is why an open, textured, high-loft or mesh-faced fabric that would be ideal in a summer road singlet turns into a run of pulled loops after two forest events. The correct base is a tight, closed, smooth-faced polyester knit in the 150 to 180 gsm band with moderate elastane: dense enough that vegetation slides across it rather than catching, stable enough that the sublimated livery stays crisp, and stretchy enough to run in without binding. Cooling then has to come from somewhere other than an open face, which is why an o-suit's ventilation lives in the underarm and side torso — the only areas that neither meet vegetation head-on nor sit under a bib.

The strike panels are a tear problem with a known geometry. Shin, knee and forearm are the four surfaces that meet a fallen branch, a rock edge or a thorn stem at speed, and there the requirement changes from snag resistance to tear strength: a high-tenacity woven ripstop at 90 to 140 gsm, whose grid arrests a puncture instead of letting it run into a tear that opens the length of the leg. That panel must be a real fabric change joined flat to the knit body, not a printed graphic — a distinction worth checking explicitly, because it is the most commonly faked feature in this category. Trail kit then reverses the logic on the torso: there is no vegetation strike zone above the waist, so ventilation can be as open as the wet-state opacity test allows, but only in the narrow bands a loaded vest does not cover. Below the waist the trail short is a two-part garment — a light woven outer at 100 to 140 gsm that takes scrub and rock contact and dries after a stream crossing, over a compressive knit liner at 180 to 210 gsm that controls chafe across a multi-hour effort.

Sublimation is the correct decoration route for the suit body, the trail top and the short: it adds no film or stitched edge under a vest strap or a pinned bib, it survives repeated soaking, mud and wash cycling without lifting the way a heat-applied transfer can, and it reproduces the high-contrast two-colour geometry that orienteering liveries use to stay identifiable at a distance in forest. Construction: The Strike Panel, the Vest Yoke, the Bib Mount

The Strike Panel Is a Fabric Change, Not a Print

Shin, knee and forearm take the impacts in forest, and a correctly built o-suit answers that with a genuine high-tenacity woven ripstop panel joined flat to the knit body at those four surfaces — low-profile seams at the panel perimeter so nothing sits proud on the shin, bar-tacked corners where the panel meets a stretch field, and a specified tear-strength value on the panel fabric in the production colourway. What is sold instead, routinely, is a printed graphic that looks like a panel on a rendering and is a single layer of the same knit in reality. The difference shows up on the third event, when a branch that would have skidded off ripstop instead punctures a knit and the puncture runs. The Vest Owns the Shoulders and the Upper Back

On any trail garment, a loaded hydration vest is a permanent fixture from the start line onward, and it dictates two decisions that both have to be settled before artwork is approved. The first is comfort: nothing raised may sit under the strap yoke or the back panel — no crossing seam ridge, no shoulder pocket, no thick heat-applied decoration, no zip pull, no label — because a detail that is imperceptible in a fitting room is an abrasion at hour two and a wound at hour six, and the athlete's response is simply to race in something else. The second is commercial: between the vest on the upper back and a pinned race number on the chest, the two positions a club instinctively puts its crest and its sponsors in are the two that will not appear in a single race photograph. Branding moves to the sleeve, the shoulder cap outside the strap footprint, the lower back below the pack line, and the thigh.

The Bib Mount and the Mandatory-Kit Shell

Two components that first orders almost always omit, and both are cheap inside the original run. The first is a reinforced race-number mount: competitors pin or clip a bib to the chest at essentially every event, and four pin holes in a single-layer stretch knit under a running stride become four tears within a season. A bonded or twin-layered flat mount zone spreads that load and stops the bib flapping, and it costs a fraction of a repair programme. The second is the packable shell. Where organisers enforce a carried-kit list, every athlete needs a wind- and water-resistant layer that compresses into a vest pocket and weighs almost nothing — packed volume and weight are specification lines, because a shell that will not fit the vest is a shell that gets left behind and fails the kit check. Fit Is Proven in Terrain, Loaded, and in the Dark

A full-cover suit that binds is worse than no suit, and a fit approval taken standing still proves nothing about either category. The o-suit needs an articulated knee, a rise graded for a high-knee stride through undergrowth, a leg cuff that stays down over the sock line, and a sleeve that clears the wrist so a control punch or a thumb compass is never obstructed. The trail set needs to be run in with a loaded vest for long enough to find the yoke rub and with a bib pinned on to load the mount. Both need a headlamp check on the reflective placement, because night legs, dawn starts and long finishes put these squads on trail in the dark far more often than road runners. How to Vet a Custom Orienteering and Trail Running Kit Manufacturer

Most sublimation factories can print a long-sleeve top and a running tee. Far fewer specify a real strike panel with a tear value, build a clean vest yoke, reinforce a bib mount, and prove fit in terrain under a loaded pack. These eight checks separate the two before you commit a deposit.

Ask what goes on the shin and forearm, by name

This is the fastest way to find out whether a factory has built forest kit before. A supplier who has will name a high-tenacity woven ripstop strike panel, quote a tear-strength value for it, and describe how it joins flat to the knit body without a ridge across the shin. One who has not will offer a printed panel on a single-layer knit and call it reinforcement — a garment that will be torn open at the shin inside three events, which is a specification failure wearing the costume of a design choice.

Put a hydration vest on the table

Ask the supplier to show you, physically or in a photograph, where the club crest, sponsor marks and seams will sit relative to a loaded vest's shoulder straps and back panel. A factory that has worked in trail will move decoration off the centre chest and centre upper back unprompted, and will flatten or reroute every seam under the yoke. One that defaults to a centre-chest crest is about to deliver a sponsor programme that is invisible in every race photograph and a rub point in every long race.

Interrogate the race-number mount

Ask exactly how a bib attaches to the front of the o-suit and the trail top, and what stops pin holes from propagating. The correct answer is a reinforced, bonded or twin-layered flat mount zone drawn at tech-pack stage. If the answer is that the athlete pins it wherever they like, you are buying a garment that will be torn in four places after its first championship and the squad will be racing in taped bibs by the second.

Weigh and pack the mandatory-kit shell

Ask for the packed dimensions and the weight of the shell, then check them against the pocket of the vest the squad actually races in, and ask for water-repellency and wind-resistance data on the fabric. A shell that is a hundred grams heavier and a size larger than it needs to be gets left in a drop bag, which means it fails the organiser's kit check and it fails the athlete on the ridge where it was supposed to matter.
