A competition breech is a stretch woven, not a knit, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a tradition. The garment has to deliver deep four-way stretch through hip and knee flexion while still presenting the flat, structured, tailored face that a judged discipline expects under a coat — and a knit that is soft enough to feel good in the hand will bag at the knee by the second class. The working band is 240 to 290 gsm in a poly-nylon-spandex construction with genuine recovery after repeated elongation. Silicone print and synthetic suede behave differently — print is lighter, lower-profile and can be dosed in a pattern; suede is warmer in hand, more durable against a rough saddle flap, and adds a visible panel line — but both have to be stretch-matched to the base fabric. A grip applied stiffer than the fabric under it restricts the rider and cracks along the flex lines; a grip cured wrong or dosed too thin peels at the edges after a month of washing. Below the knee the garment is inside a boot, so the build inverts. Seams are eliminated or moved, hems are flat rather than turned, and a stirrup or sock foot anchors the leg so it cannot ride up during the session. Above the knee the problem is the opposite: the pattern must accommodate deep, sustained flexion. That means a longer back rise so the waistband does not pull down when the rider sits, an articulated knee so the fabric is not stretched to its limit exactly where the grip sits, a contoured waistband that does not fold into the front of the hip, and a deliberate absence of rear pockets or heavy seams anywhere the seat bones meet the saddle.
